Flyers Alumni Newsletter: January 2025

A Grand Start to Our Next 40 Years

In 2024, the Flyers Alumni Association celebrated our 40th Anniversary. We started off our “next 40” by rolling out some new programs and expanding upon existing ones geared toward increasing our community impact in the Delaware Valley as well as staying connected to Flyers Alumni from every generation, regardless of where they currently reside.

This past year, the Alumni set a new record for fundraising and charitable giving. We anticipate breaking that mark and raising the bar even higher in 2025.

I want to call special attention to several upcoming events in 2025. Our Alumni Charity Classic weekend in June will feature three events over three successive days in separate locales: pickleball in Malvern, PA on June 21, a 5K walk/run and bicycling event in Conshohocken on the 22nd, and the annual Alumni Golf event at Dupont Country Club in Wilmington on the 23rd. Come August 1 to 7, the Alumni are taking a week-long golfing trip to Dublin, Ireland, in conjunction with Executive Global Tours.

Additionally, a wide array of our signature fundraising events will continue to grow and evolve in 2025: Friday Night Fights, Flyers Alumni Fantasy Camp (our 11th annual edition), and more. We also look forward to a record-setting year for our Every Child Deserves a Bike and 12 Days of Christmas giving programs.

Recently, we welcomed several recently retired NHL players as members of our organization. Flyers Alumni membership is automatic — no applications, dues, etc. — for anyone who played in at least one regular season or playoff game for the Flyers during his pro hockey career.

2024 FLYERS ALUMNI PICKLEBALL

On June 18, 2024, the Flyers Alumni held our first official Alumni pickleball event at Bounce Pickleball in Malvern, PA.  The event proceeds supported the Flyers Alumni Association and was a precursor to what’s ahead for our 2025 Alumni Classic weekend.

A couple dozen Flyers fans of differing levels of pickleball experience attended our inaugural event. We received positive feedback from the attending fans. Seven Flyers Aumni took part.
Participating Alumni: John LeClair, Scott Hartnell, Todd Fedoruk, Neil Little, Paul Holmgren, Brad Marsh, Bob Kelly.
2024 ALUMNI GOLF

More than 60 Flyers Alumni, whose NHL playing careers spanned every generation of team history, attended the 2024 edition of our annual Alumni Golf fundraising event at Dupont Country Club in Wilmington on June 24, 2024. Shortly prior to teeing off, the Alumni made an adaptive bike presentation to Josie as part of our Every Child Deserves a Bike signature program in conjunction with Help Hope Live.

As part of our 2024 Alumni weekend, the Alumni Golf participants braved the elements to get together at Wells Fargo Center for a private Alumni-only dinner event one night before the golf outing. Every Child Deserves a Bike: Update

Dating back to our first edition of the 12 Days of Christmas, it has been a tradition to present an adaptive bicycle to a child in the Delaware Valley as part of our Every Child Deserves a Bike program. This year, we went one better with two separate adaptive bike presentations during 12 Days. In total, the Flyers Alumni have funded and presented nearly four dozen fully customized adaptive bikes throughout the program’s history. To learn more, click here: https://flyersalumni.net/deserves-a-bike/

12 Days of Christmas: 2024 edition

The fifth annual edition of our winter holiday season giving program broke last year’s record for total money and volunteer hours donated to local charities and Delaware families in need of a helping hand. Alumni House Calls

This past year, the Flyers Alumni Association introduced a new program called “Alumni House Calls”. The premise is simple: Flyers Alumni pay an in-person visit to a fellow Alum who is no longer able to travel on his own to attend Alumni events or social gatherings. The first house call was paid to our senior Alum, Forbes Kennedy. Fellow Flyers alum and Prince Edward Island native Al MacAdam met with Joe Watson and, together, they paid Forbie a visit in Prince Edward Island. Unexpectedly, the get-together drew media coverage from the CBC affiliate in PEI, who reported on it in their television news broadcast.
