HOF Game: Team Holmgren Nips Team Tocchet, 6-5

In front of a crowd of 5,000-plus at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday evening, Team Holmgren narrowly defeated Team Tocchet, 6-5, at the Flyers Alumni Hall of Fame game. All proceeds from the game went to Flyers Charities and the charity programs run by the Flyers Alumni Association (“Every Child Deserves a Bike”, “12 Days of Christmas Giving”).

In NHL Alumni games, it’s almost always the skaters with the younger legs that stand out the most. That was the case again on Monday with Scottie Upshall recording a hat trick and an assist for Team Holmgren with Joffrey Lupul notching a goal and three assists.

The game came down to a penalty shot for Team Tocchet’s Danny Briere in the final minute. Briere lost the puck trying to make one final cut to the right to tuck the puck inside the post. Goaltending chores were split for Team Holmgren between Robert Esche and Neil Little, while Mike McKenna and, over the latter portion of the third period, Flyers Warriors goalie Bill Duffy were in net for Team Tocchet.

 

 

The prettiest goals of the nights were scored by Team Tocchet’s Simon Gagne. Both came on 2-on-1 rushes with Briere. On the first, Gagne pulled off his patented move to the backhand and scored. On the latter, he had a tap-in at the left post after a tape-to-tape pass from Briere.

There was a scary moment in the second period of the game when Team Holmgren defenseman Kjell Samuelsson deflected a pass and ramped up off his stick to strike Team Tocchet’s Mike Knuble in the face. Knuble bled but didn’t require stitches (a little glue did the trick). Being a hockey player, Knuble returned for the third period.
