Matthew Barnaby Player Profile
Matthew Barnaby was not a heavyweight by physical measure weighing in at 190 pounds in his prime. However, Barns was among the most effective agitators in NHL history. Despite his relatively smaller size, Matthew Barnaby would not allow himself to be intimated even by the largest of opponents. A shining example of this is when, during the 1995-1996 season, Barnaby set a single-season career high with 29 fights and 335 penalty minutes as a member of the Sabres. The following year Bam-Bam demonstrated his versatility by setting a career high in both goals (19) and points (43) while only playing in 68 games.
Matthew Barnaby was born May 4th, 1973 and was originally drafted into the NHL by the Buffalo Sabres with the 83rd pick in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft. In the 1995-1996 season Barnaby established a full-time role for the Buffalo Sabres. It was also during this 1995-1996 season which Barns accrued a career high 336 penalty minutes. It was in 1996 when Matthew Barnaby had perhaps his most notable encounter with the Philadelphia Flyers. What started with Barnaby on the ice appearing injured, resulted in an entire line brawl. During the brawl, Flyers goaltender Garth Snow started poking Barnaby while the refs were otherwise occupied. It was at this point Barnaby immediately jumped to his skates to retaliate against Snow.
After 8 season with the Buffalo Sabres Matthew Barnaby was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Following his stint with the Penguins; Barnaby would go on to play for the Tampa Bay Lighting, New York Rangers, Colorado Avalache, Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars.
