Dave Shultz Player Profile
In his heyday with the Flyers, Schultz was Public Enemy everywhere he went outside the Spectrum. His 472 penalty minutes in 1974-75 still represents a single-season NHL record. Had numerous fighting rivalries, but most notably with Boston’s Terry O’Reilly. Excelled at tying out his opponent’s dominant punching arm and in getting a quick jump in the bout. Schultz could also score some goals, scoring 20 goals (including two hat tricks in a single week) during the 1973-74 season. Dave scored the series-winning goal in the 1974 Stanley Cup Quarterfinals.
Born October 14th, 1949, the two time Stanley Cup champion wasn’t always an enforcer. Schultz stepped into an enforcer role for his NHL debut, but he was more than capable of scoring goals. He recorded 20 goals in the 1973-1974 season. Schultz had the idea of using boxing wraps on his wrists and hands to prevent injury during fights, this became pretty popular for enforcers across the NHL and World Hockey Association. Both organizations would implement the “Schultz Rule,” banning the wraps.
Doug Shultz was apart of the Broad Street Bullies and played for the Flyers from 1971-1976. He then would go on to spend time with the Kings, Penguins, and Sabres from 1976-1980. Schultz is also coming out with an auto-biography, with an expected release date in 2025
